Photography Monthly World Cup Podcast Special
Photography Monthly editor Grant Scott and deputy editor Sean Samuels chat with Mail On Sunday sports photographer Mark Pain. He explains how he shoots while covering matches, what he shoots with and takes us through the tough processes behind capturing and submitting images to the national newspapers.
England v USA - Rustenburg
The build up to the England's World Cup campaign had been massive with great expectation. It was thought that England's World Cup Group was a fairly easy one to get out of. However as we neared the first game there were real injury worries to several players and no one knew who Fabio Capello wold play alongside John Terry in defence or in goal with David James unavailable due to injury.

Pic 1: Brazil are always likely to come up with some new celebration after scoring and their shirts make for great colour on a dark background - It can make an ordinary picture just that little bit special.
Pic 2 : Robert Green - The selection of who was going to play in goal for the USA game was by far the biggest story - so I decided to shoot the first half on England's defence and concentrate on Robert Green who had been chosen to start. His huge error in letting in the USA goal was a personal disaster but made for what I think will be an iconic image of England's World Cup and will stay with him for the rest of his career. It made for a great first back page of the World Cup for the Mail On Sunday.
Pic 3: Arsenal's Robin Van Persie challenges for a high ball i the second half.
