Panasonic unleashes the G6, LF1 and G Vario 14-140mm

Panasonic is following up the exciting release of the Lumix GF6 with a host of new cameras and a new lens, which we got our sticky mitts on.

The headlining release is the new G6, a step up from the G5, which will still be available in the UK. This latest DSLM offers a 16.05MP Live MOS Sensor with improved AF system in low light and noise reduction capabilities. It also includes an extended ISO range up to 25,600 to cope with extremely low light situations.

We got our hands on it for a test run in Vienna. The camera handled extremely well with the AF system doing exactly as promised and the low light capability really coming through and proving itself. The creative filters are vast and image levelling really comes in handy on the display when shooting the cityscape. There are some quirky modes such as ‘meal mode’ and overall it's a fast-performing and accurate camera. You can read our full review of the G6, GF6 and vario lens, with sample images, in the July issue of the magazine.

Next on the list is the new LF1, a truly dinky little camera which weighs almost nothing. This compact has a wide-angle zoom and 12.1-megapixel MOS Senor. It also has Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for instant sharing, perfect for the enthusiast, social photographer.

Lastly is the latest Lumix lens, the Lumix G Vario 14-140mm/f/3.5-5.6 ASPH./Power O.I.S. Using this with the G6 on the Vienna trip was a match made in heaven as the lens has a great zoom range and didn’t struggle with the Auto Focus nor the quality over its focal length. Great for shooting up close, and for skylines in the distance.

Press release:

Lumix G6:
Panasonic has today launched its newest DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) camera, the Lumix DMC-G6, offering a 16.05M Live MOS Sensor, the advanced process noise reduction systems and a ‘Low Light AF’ function enabling serious photographers to take the quality of their pictures even further regardless of low-light situations.

Raising the bar in system camera image quality
The new powerful Venus Engine coupled with the Lumix DMC-G6’s 16.05M Live MOS Sensor enable users to demonstrate the true image quality achievable with a DSLM camera. Furthermore the camera has an improved ISO range from 160 ISO all the way up to 25,600 ISO (extended) allowing photographs to be captured in spite of very little light in some environments.

Boasting a high speed AF system, ‘Accurate AF’ and ‘Low Light AF’ for shooting in low-light conditions, you’ll never miss the perfect moment with the Lumix DMC-G6. A wide range of AF modes are available, including multiple-area AF, Face Detection, and AF Tracking resulting in the Lumix DMC-G6 being able to lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves. Additionally, the Lumix DMC-G6’s rapid burst shooting capability - at seven Frames per Second (fps) in full resolution, can capture multiple shots of fast-moving subjects with stunning clarity.

The quality advances of the Lumix DMC-G6 are not restricted to still images. A 24p video mode has been added enabling users to capture moving images and play them back with a dedicated ‘film like’ appearance. The sensor and Venus Engine enable the camera to record in Full HD 1080/50p, with stereo sound, producing professional movie quality with minimal noise. With outputs in both AVCHD progressive and MP4, the Lumix DMC-G6 provides wide compression and compatibility options. The long recording times, instant access controls, advanced AF system and Lumix G lenses specifically designed for movie shooting, means the Lumix DMC-G6 is the perfect option for capturing beautiful movies with ease.

Giving photographers an enhanced view and faster operation
The Lumix DMC-G6 benefits from an OLED viewfinder which is not only brighter than a traditional LCD viewfinder but is also faster to display images, offers better visibility outdoors in bright sunlight and increases battery life due to lower power consumption.

With a choice of using either the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with eye sensor, or the high resolution, 3.0-inch free-angle monitor to compose your shots and movies, you can capture the moment as the situation demands. Meanwhile, the revolutionary touch control shooting - including full-area touch focusing where the focus can be set immediately to the subject, or to the background, by just one touch of the large monitor even when using the EVF – gives you the control to compose and create stunning images.

Cablefree Connectivity with Wi-Fi and NFC
Introduced into the Lumix G range with the Lumix DMC-GF6, the Lumix DMC-G6 also features integrated Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity offering a more flexible shooting experience and easy image sharing from an interchangeable lens camera. After the initial setup, tablets and smartphones for remote shooting can be connected with a simple touch without having to re-enter authorisation details every time.

Lumix LF1:
Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-LF1, the latest addition to its high-end compact range, is perfect for enthusiasts looking for the very best in imaging, editing and design. The camera provides unrivalled versatility, with impressive wide angle and zoom range to suit a variety of shooting scenarios. It also boasts a 12.1-megapixel MOS sensor and high ISO sensitivity for outstanding performance in low-light, as well as a host of other functions. The Lumix DMC-LF1 gives you complete control of your photography and, with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, lets you share images and video instantly.

High-performance lens in a slim body
Panasonic’s advanced optical technology has made it possible to fit a 28mm-200mm high performance lens into the Lumix DMC-LF1’s lightweight and beautifully designed compact body. The new f/2.0 Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens will offer amazing image quality, even when you find yourself in low-light conditions. The high influx of light allows for faster shutter speeds, ensuring stunning, blur-free images. Similarly, the lens’ f/2.0 aperture makes capturing professional looking photos with shallow depth of field and beautiful, warm backgrounds easier than ever before.

The new Leica lens also offers outstanding range in terms of width and zoom. A 28-200mm wide angled lens with 7.1x optical zoom is designed to help you take perfect shots in a variety of shooting situations. From panoramic photos of rolling landscapes to intricate portrait shots, the Lumix DMC-LF1 offers consistently outstanding image quality and performance.

Superior image quality
With the Lumix DMC-LF1’s new Leica lens and a 12.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS Sensor, you can take advantage of a wonderfully wide dynamic range of 80 – 12800. Even when your composition includes a strong contrast of light and dark, the Lumix DMC-LF1 is capable of taking high resolution images with stunning clarity. The camera’s Venus Engine further enhances performance and image quality, thanks to the very latest Panasonic Noise Reduction and Edge Smoothing systems. No matter what time of day or night, the camera will minimise distortion and noise guaranteeing beautiful, true-to-life pictures.

The Lumix DMC-LF1’s impressive image quality is not limited to still photography. Despite its compact size, it is also capable of capturing beautiful, full HD 1920x1080 50i video recording, in both AVCHD Progressive and MP4 outputs.

Take complete control
The Lumix DMC-LF1 has been designed to provide you with complete control over your photography, wherever you find that once-in-a-lifetime shot and whatever the conditions. By framing and aligning subjects with the most suitable pattern from a new composition guide consisting of Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2 and S-Shape, images will be perfectly composed for stunning perspective and refined results. A new 0.2-inch electronic viewfinder, in addition to the 3-inch LCD display, means you can choose a shooting configuration that perfectly suits your style. Similarly, a Control Ring at the base of the lens barrel makes it easy to manually control aperture, shutter speed and zoom with minimal movement, allowing you concentrate on your target and set up the camera for that perfect picture.

The Lumix DMC-LF1 also lets you add your own creative touches both before and after you’ve pressed the shutter. Creative Control and Creative Retouch include 15 filter effects and will help turn the most ordinary shots into truly artistic images. 13 of these filter effects can also be applied to panorama shots in Creative Panorama.

Share your creativity
With a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi capability, the Lumix DMC-LF1 offers unprecedented control, connectivity and ability to share. After a first initial setup, NFC compatibility lets you turn on Wi-Fi with a simple tap of a smartphone or tablet, so no more troublesome menus or setup procedures. Similarly, images and video can be shared between a range connected devices in just moments. With the Panasonic Image App, you can even use your mobile device as a remote controller to view, zoom, set the focus and shoot from distance. Finally, with Easy Share, you can easily upload and share your favourite images and videos to a host of social networking sites, letting you share your latest masterpiece with the world.

Maximising creative expression in a fixed lens camera

We have managed to incorporate a host of features and functions, including a high-performance Leica lens, into a beautifully designed and incredibly mobile camera. With the Lumix DMC-LF1, photographers will be in complete control of their images and video, both when composing, shooting and editing. Even better is the fact that you can instantly share that creativity with the world, thanks to the Limix DMC-LF1’s amazing connectivity capabilities.”
