Ewen Spencer 'England's Dreaming' exhibition

Skins photographer, Ewen Spencer, will be exhibiting his new project showcasing what it means to be young in England.

Acclaimed photographer Ewen Spencer, whose seminal shots of Channel 4’s award-winning Skins cast let loose gained him nationwide acknowledgment in 2007, is set to unveil a series of photographs entitled ‘England’s Dreaming’ at the White Cloth Gallery in Leeds next week from 4 October.

England’s Dreaming consists of a series of images taken in and around the country that encompass the artist’s profound interest in youth and street culture. The exhibition, shot over 15 years, examines what it means to be young in 21st century Britain, capturing the familiar awkward moments of adolescence.

Shot in Spencer’s signature flash photography style, the candid photos show Britain’s youth in action as they tackle the sensitive issues of dating, sex and socialising. Without an adult in sight, the subjects often indulge in underage boozing, snogging and bickering, with the photographer seemingly having an invisible presence at the time of shooting.

Tickets for the White Cloth Gallery launch can be purchased at the gallery or at www.eventbrite.com and attendees will have the chance to win a selection of unique prizes by Ewen Spencer in a charity auction.

Peter Dench, photojournalist and co-founder of the White Cloth Gallery said: “We are absolutely delighted to be showcasing the candid work of Ewen Spencer at the White Cloth Gallery. It’s really important to bring names such as his to the north for all to enjoy and England’s Dreaming is a great example of his impressive look at youth culture. The way he shoots makes it seem like he is there, on the same wavelength as his subjects, but at the same time invisible to them as he captures the moments they don’t want anyone to see.

“Our mission to maintain a popular space where the work of established artists such as Spencer can be exhibited alongside upcoming talent is fully underway. The walls of our restaurant house some of the very best art from the local area that we are hugely proud to be able to showcase. As a developing centre for the arts, Leeds is becoming a go-to destination on the UK’s culture map and we’re really glad to be a part of it.”

Prior to the exhibition on the 4 October, White Cloth Gallery is offering its visitors the chance to meet the artist in a Q&A session at the gallery. Spencer’s celebrated book on London’s grime scene entitled Open Mic is also available to purchase from the gallery.

The exhibition will last four weeks. For more details, visit whiteclothgallery.com.
