PM's Guide to the Weekend

Don't quite know what to do this weekend? Is it a toss between braving the rain and heading to an outdoor festival or would you rather stay in the dry. Here is our list of suggestions of what photo opportunities are about and current exhibitions.

Enter Focus Forward Films
The challenge is to make a three minute non-fiction film, based on the theme of invention and innovation. Films must be suitable for all audiences. Need some inspiration? Then visit the website below. It can be about anyone making a difference, utilising their skills and vision to innovate, share their work and help sow the seeds of a brighter future. The winning film will win $100,000. Time to get to work!

Apply for the Ian Parry Scholarship
If you are either in a full-time photographic course or are under the age of 24 you can apply for the Ian Parry Scholarship. You must submit a sample portfolio as well as a brief synopsis of the project they would undertake if you won. The prize is £3,500 towards the chosen assignment. Sponsors are The Sunday Times and Getty Images, so your work could end up in the national newspaper as well. Deadline is 20th July

Enter Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2012
The closing date for entering the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize is looming, 9 July, so if you have not already entered now is the time to do so.The 2011 Prize was won by Jooney Woodward and the exhibition that followed with 60 selected works were seen by over 75,00 people.

Enter the Art of Building photography competition
The Art of Building competition is now open, free to amateurs and professionals and dedicated to the built environment. There are four categories to enter although you can only enter a total of three photographs across any of the categories. The winner of the 2012 competition will be chosen by the public and will receive £2,000 cash prize.

Enter the Lomography competition
Ever wanted to get your image on an album cover? If the answer is YES!? Now is your chance with Lomography. This is the second competition like this that Lomo have run, the theme for this competition being ‘Remember Summer’ (this may be hard with all of the bad weather we have had!) The winning image will make the cover of an iTunes album image. You have until 15 July.

Five exhibitions to visit this weekend

Jim Marshall: The Rolling Stones and Beyond
If you are in New York and want to see a piece of music history then visit the Steven Kasher Gallery to see Jim Marshall: The Rolling Stones and Beyond. Featuring over 60 photographs and over one hundred vintage record covers mapping Jim Marshall’s entire career, never-before-seen images he captured during the Rolling Stones’ 1972 U.S. tour will be on display. The exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the band, and the 40th anniversary of that legendary tour. Open until 8th September.

Out of Focus
Saatchi Gallery is currently hosting Out of Focus, its first major photography exhibition since 2001, which runs until 15 July. 39 photographers work gathered under one roof from all over the world, they all approach photography in different ways, some reworking old images as well as the classic documentary photographs.

In it to Win it
In the spirit of the Olympics, the Scottish National Gallery will open a display of new and old of sporting heroes and heroines on 4 July. Scottish tennis legend Andy Murray is a given on the list, but there are also many new commissions on display including a portrait of the golfer Colin Montgomerie by Iain Faulkner and a triptych of Olympic contender Sir Chris Hoy by Jennifer McRae. Runs until 7 October.

Hidden World
The Little Black Gallery is now hosting Hidden World, featuring still life images by Gered Mankowitz until 30 July. Mankowitz is well known for his images of Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, and many other rock legends but lesser know for his interest in still life, in particular of watching and helping them decay and rust and then photographing them. These still life images are now being exhibited for the first time.

140 Characters
One Hundred and Forty Characters is a cutting edge project by celebrity portrait photographer and film maker Chris Floyd. A unique portrait collection of 140 individuals, the exhibition is the culmination of Floyd’s quest to put faces to the Twitter names that he had become familiar with online.The portraits, all shot on a white backdrop in the artist’s studio, include a mix of people from all walks of life. Runs until 26 July.
