140 Characters at White Cloth Gallery Leeds

140 Characters at White Cloth Gallery Leeds

The recently opened Leeds’ White Cloth Gallery – a brand new photography and film gallery and the first of its kind in the North of England – is set to unveil an internationally acclaimed Twitter project that offers a thought provoking look at the way we communicate in the modern era, all in 140 characters.

Launching on the 14th June and running for seven weeks, ‘One Hundred and Forty Characters’ is a cutting edge project by celebrity portrait photographer and film maker Chris Floyd. A unique portrait collection of 140 individuals, the exhibition is the culmination of Floyd’s quest to put faces to the Twitter names that he had become familiar with online.

As part of the exhibition, the gallery will also host a two day event where members of the public can come down and have their portrait taken by Floyd - the same photographer that snapped high profile celebrities such as Sir Paul McCartney and Gwyneth Paltrow.

One year in the making, this pioneering exhibition features images inspired by Floyd’s interaction with the photographers, editors and other individuals he follows on Twitter, some of which he spoke to on a more regular basis than his closest, dearest friends and family.

Bridging the gap between how we maintain traditional relationships and how we increasingly form friendships through online communications in a growing digital age, the portraits, all shot on a white backdrop in the artist’s studio, include a mix of people from all walks of life, from a taxi driver, a lecturer, and a civil servant to the woman who heads up air traffic control at Heathrow.

Peter Dench photojournalist and co-founder of White Cloth Gallery said: “Our opening exhibition was a great success and we’re delighted that Chris Floyd’s innovative Twitter project will be the second exhibition at the White Cloth Gallery, Leeds.

“We also look forward to giving visitors the once in a lifetime opportunity to have their portrait taken by Floyd. The one-off event taking place 16-17th June will provide the celebrity experience, but without the price tag. We will be inviting the public to have their portrait taken for just £20, a tiny fraction of the cost that the celeb snapper would normally charge for a shoot – we expect to see a great response.

“It’s our intention that the gallery will be a popular space where the work of established artists such as Chris will be exhibited alongside upcoming local talent, aiding Yorkshire’s burgeoning development as a region of arts and culture.”
