Photographer celebrates Norwich competition win for second year running
A pro photographer with an eye for reportage style has won a Norwich photography competition for the second year running with his unique take on the town's heritage.
Alan Bennett, 46, from St Ives in Cambridgeshire, won the over 25s category of Norwich HEART’s fourth annual photography contest with his story-telling image of 80-year-old Norwich resident, Malcolm Jay, controlling his model sailing boat at the city's Eaton Park.
The competition and its theme, ‘Alternative Angles: A new perspective on Norwich’s heritage', received more than 420 entries, looking at aspects including photographic content, composition and originality and also saw photographer Rebecca Croucher pick up the the winner's title for the under 25s category.
Alan said: "Although corporate work is my bread and butter, I have a passion for social documentary photography. It is an incredible feeling to win for the second year running and very rewarding to have confirmation that my photography can create a conversation and be thought provoking."
In reference to his winning image, Alan added: "Malcolm was aged 12 when he watched this scene on Eaton Park boat pond for the very first time with his Grandad back in the mid 1930s. After the Second World War he became a member of the Norwich Model Boat Club and has been actively involved with the club’s activities ever since."
On the judging panel was Sonya Duncan, photographer for Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News; Mark Bullimore, freelance photographer; and Michael Loveday, chief executive at Norwich HEART - which is a charitable trust set up to preserve Norwich's heritage.
The judges said: “Alan’s photograph really caught our attention both technically and emotionally. It uses a lovely human, reportage style and shows the human condition to its fullest. As a viewer of the image, we get to experience the photographer’s perspective and the perspective of the subject. It tells a story of heritage on a number of levels.”
Winning and shortlisted entries will go on display at a public exhibition in The Forum in Norwich from 5 March to 15 March 2012.
