Fuji X-Pro-1 mirrorless camera revealed

Fuji X-Pro-1 revealed

Leading the pack on a busy first day at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was Fujifilm’s first compact system camera, the X-Pro-1

Featuring a 16-megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor, the Fuji X-Pro-1 is capable of delivering resolution “parallel, if not superior to” a full-frame sensor, the company claims.

The increased quality, Fuji says, is down to a new colour filter array that eliminates the need for an optical low-pass filter, which is traditionally used to reduce moiré and false colour generated by digital camera sensors, but also degrades resolution.

Fuji’s new colour filter array is inspired by fine film grain and places pixels in 6x6 sets, which are arranged randomly. The random arrangement “eliminates the fundamental cause of moiré,” the company claims, while the presence of an R, G and B pixel in every vertical and horizontal pixel series helps minimise false colours.

Another signature feature of the Fuji X-Pro-1 is its Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, which first appeared on the Fuji FinePix X100 last year. The Hybrid Viewfinder lets users instantly switch between an optical viewfinder and electronic viewfinder.

Elsewhere, an EXR Processor Pro provides more power to maximise the full potential of the X-Trans CMOS sensor, Fuji says, delivering high speed and precision.

The new Fuji camera introduces the X-mount along with three fast-aperture prime lenses, the XF 18mm f/2, XF 35mm f/1.4 and XF 60mm f/2.4. The X-mount has a short flange back distance of 17.7mm, Fuji says, which means the rear lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor and the wide opening allows the lens to be mounted deeper within the body – up to 7.5mm.

The retro-styled X-Pro-1 body falls in line with the company’s recent releases, the X10 and X100, and is made from die-cast aluminium alloy with metal dials and a synthetic leather finish.

Other features include a selection of 10 Film Simulation modes, ISO sensitivity up to 6400 and Full HD video recording.

Fuji X-Pro-1 price and release date information is not yet available.

  1. I'm guessing the 17.7mm back distance means that Zeiss and Leitz RFoptics are compatible? I gather Fuji make Zeiss optics under licence, so lens-wise this should be a good product!

No doubt some people will be hoping this is will be a sub-?800 product, but I doubt this level of quality will be available that low.
