Editor's letter
I’m an avid viewer of the tour de france and i have been since the days of DICKIE DAVIES AND ITV’S world of sport. The cyclists’ dedication, fitness and determination never cease to amaze me, but however much I try to concentrate on the race itself, my eye has always been drawn to the daredevil motorcyclists swooping in front of the riders, with photographers hanging off the back. It’s this fearless dedication to getting ‘the picture’ which we salute this month. The world is full of photographic opportunities if you’re willing to put yourself out to capture them and there is no doubting that Michael Kenna, Ian Berry, Peter Dench, Graham Watson, David Loftus and Martin Middlebrook have all put themselves on the frontline at some point in the name of photography. Which makes their advice this month all the more welcome and essential for those of us not so willing to hang off the back of a motorbike, enter a war zone or spend all day in the frozen wastes.
We did, however, send PM deputy editor Sean Samuels out on to the BMX frontline this month to find out whether having a press pass makes you a pro photographer. He claims also to have risked his life, although we’re not so sure. What there is no disagreement about is that in this month’s PM everyone shares a passion for photography just like you. Our new coverline sums up where we are: ‘Experience Life and Capture the Moment’. Now let’s go and take pictures!
