Travel competition winner announced
Thank you to everyone who entered the Travel Competition. The standard of images was very high. Here are the top 3 and what professional photographer and author Steve Davey has to say.
Winner:
Faith by Rolandgp / Nikon D80 / Philippines
One of the reasons why I love this shot is that it illustrates that you can take great pictures whatever the weather! The photographer has taken the trouble to go out with his camera even though everyone else was carrying an umbrella! The composition is tight, and not centred. The saturation has been enhanced, but not too much, and it is a totally engaging shot that makes me want to know more about it!
Rolandgp wins a Nikon D90 camera kit.
Runner-up:
Ganges Morning Worship by liaming123 / Compact camera / Varnasi, India
This shot is deceptively good. At Varanasi in India, it is too easy to go on a boat trip and shoot to your hearts content as pilgrims come down to bathe. The pictures almost take themselves, and the subject matter is so interesting it is hard not to take an evocative shot. This picture is streets ahead though: the sight-lines, and connections in the frame are perfect. Everyone seems to be looking in the same place. which ties the image together wonderfully. It is a fantastic tableau, that could almost have been set up - more reminiscent of a painting than a photograph. I even like the black and white treatment: too often a photographer will kick an average colour shot into b/w to try to save it. This would have been a great shot in colour as well.
liaming123 wins a Nikon Coolpix P6000 compact camera.
Third:
Home by Dave 2006 / Sony a100 / Southwold, Suffolk
Again, a deceptively simple shot, that is very well executed. It is a bit of a cliché, but if you are photographing a cliché you have to do it perfectly to get away with it. The dog looking into the hut, and the pastel colour on a rainy day are what make this picture. It also shows that you can shoot great travel shots close to home.
Dave 2006 wins a signed copy of Travel Photography by Steve Davey.
