HP and Magnum Photos launch competition
HP and Magnum Photos have joined forces to launch an international competition entitled the Magnum Expression Photography Award.
The aim of the competition, which is aimed at both emerging and professional photographers, is to ‘emphasise the value of storytelling through the use of imagery.’
From today the competition is accepting submissions for the award. It ends on 30 September when the final review will begin. The winner will be announced in October.
The theme of this year’s competition is communities. The judging panel will consist of four Magnum photographers – Alec Soth, Jonas Bendiksen, Paolo Pellegrin and Susan Meiselas – and an HP representative. The panel will look for compelling documentary photography employed in innovative ways to affect social awareness and propel humanitarian compassion around the selected theme.
The judges are looking for entries that build an innovative and engaging photographic narrative, a singularity of vision, compassion for the subjects and the ability to produce a thought-provoking visual essay.
From 16 March until 31 May, photographers can submit their entries via Magnum’s website: expression.magnumphotos.com. Participants can upload eight to 15 images, a biography and a statement about the project to illustrate their story. The19 finalists and overall winner will be announced in early July.
The winner of the Magnum Expression Photography Award will receive a $10,000 grant, an HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer and supplies, the opportunity to produce a multimedia essay of the work in collaboration with Magnum in Motion, production sponsorship of a solo exhibition and mentorship from a Magnum photographer. $3000 credit for production of the photographers’ essay in book form, in collaboration with Blurb.com on HP's Indigo printers, and a customizable PhotoShelter pro account & website for one year.
Honorable mention recipients will receive: a HP Photosmart Pro B9180 & a suite of media for studio printing. $1000 contribution towards production of the photographers’ essay in book form, in collaboration with Blurb.com on HP's Indigo printers. A PhotoShelter basic account with 10GB storage and 5GB a month hi-res bandwidth.
