PDF Download: Your essential guide to printing and presentation
Some photographers never see their work in print form. Images get posted on websites, emailed across the globe and endlessly played with on computer, but they don't get printed out. Now for me, that's utter madness.
Don't get me wrong, we live in a democratic society and everyone is entitled to enjoy photography however they want, but the satisfaction of seeing a finished print is huge and it’s sad that so many people miss out on this pleasure. What's more, getting your digital pictures into print form is so simple and there are more options than ever before.
For many keen photographers, the freedom, control and thrill of home printing is unbeatable. To be able to produce perfect film-quality A4, A3 or even A2-size prints at home, minutes after a picture has been taken is amazing, and the latest technology enables just that. You can make prints on glossy paper, a textured art finish or one of the hundreds of amazing finishes currently on the market, and all for relatively little outlay.
If home printing isn’t for you, how about printing online? More people have Internet access than ever before and with fast Broadband readily available, uploading images to a website and ordering prints online is definitely an option worth using.
Online you can order bog-standard snapshot-sized prints, but there are many, many more options. You can get giant blow-ups, prints on canvas, your images on T-shirts or even make your own unique photo book. Making your own photo book is great fun and can involve the whole family. Most photo book service providers will have page templates so you just choose which pictures to use and at what size, then add your own captions. A short while later your own book will arrive through the post.
If you haven't tried this service yet, it's about time you did. If you consider the Internet rather too impersonal, there's still the option of dropping into your local photo shop, lab or supermarket and handing over a CD or memory card and getting prints done. Of course, many of the services available online are also on offer in-store.
However and whatever you decide to print, this supplement discusses the many options available so if you're not already hooked on printing your digital images, this is a great place to start. So, carry on enjoying your photography and get printing!
