Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year 2011 competition

Do you have passion for travel photography and an eye for a great photo? Do you have some breathtaking travel shots that make your friends gasp, or images that are just shamefully gathering dust on your PC? If so, Wanderlust wants to see them!

The UK’s leading magazine for adventurous and authentic travel, Wanderlust is once again on the hunt for the best travel photography from both amateurs and professionals. Launched in association with The Independent, the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year Competition – now in its 16th year – is the UK’s biggest amateur travel photo competition: last year it attracted more than 5,000 entries. The winning photos, plus a selection of shortlisted shots, will be printed in Wanderlust and The Independent, as well as being showcased in a stunning exhibition at Destinations 2012, the UK’s top holiday and travel show. The selected images will be printed by PhotoBox, the UK’s No. 1 company for photo printing.

There are two categories to enter in: Amateur (open to amateurs only) and Portfolio (open to amateur and professional photographers). The winners will find themselves on the receiving end of some fantastic prizes, including a photo commission to Colombia, £3,000 or great Nikon digital cameras.

Amateur Category

Win a trip to Colombia Situated between the Caribbean and the Andes, Colombia is a photographer’s paradise dotted with ancient sites and natural wonders. Wanderlust have joined up with Proexport Colombia – the Colombia Tourist office (www.colombia.travel/en ) – to send the four winners of the Photo of the Year Amateur category on an incredible photographic commission to this exciting South American destination. Photos entered into the Amateur category can be taken anywhere in the world, but must fit one of four categories: People, Wildlife, Landscape or Travel Icons. The Travel Icons category is designed to recognise shots of places, events and people that have achieved an iconic visual status in the world of travel.

There will be a winner for each of the four categories, each of which will be whisked away (along with a companion) to photogenic Colombia. Each runner-up will receive a Nikon D3100 camera worth £579, with the highly commended Amateur entries picking up a nifty Nikon COOLPIXS9100 camera worth £299.

Portfolio Category

Win £3,000, The Portfolio category is open to both amateur and professional photographers, with a top prize of £3,000. Entrants to this category need to assemble a set of five eye-catching images, which together present an inspiring and unique insight into one of the four categories (People, Wildlife, Landscapes, Travel Icons). The top prize will be awarded to the best portfolio for telling a cohesive and spectacular story, while the lucky runner-up will walk away with a Nikon D3100 camera worth £579.

Wanderlust’s Editor-in-Chief and founder, Lyn Hughes, comments: “Our Photo of the Year competition gives people who are passionate about photography and travel the chance to showcase their images. Each year we see a stunning collection of photos that capture the real essence of travel. I am really excited to see what spectacular and inspirational entries we receive this year.” For more details and entries of the competition, including full terms and conditions, see:
